S. D. Spady (Montessori)
Elementary School was founded in 1895 as Colored School
#4 at 170 NW 5th Avenue as part of the Dade County School
System in what was then called Linton, Florida (Linton
became Delray Beach in 1901, and in 1909, Palm Beach County
was formed from north Dade County).
In 1922, Dr. Booker T. Washington recommended Solomon
David Spady, a student of Dr. George Washington Carver,
to become principal of what was then called Smith-Hughes
Vocational School. In 1937, the School Board constructed
Carver School to serve grades 1-12 on S.D. Spady Elementary
School’s
present site. A new school, Carver High School, opened
in 1958 to serve black students in grades 9-12, which left
grades 1-8 on the present site. The school board renamed
Carver School the S. D. Spady Elementary in honor of the
former principal of 35 years and most respected educator
of the only community school for black students.
S. D. Spady Elementary School opened in the 1957-58 school
year with 952 students and 40 teachers. In 1989, Banyan
Creek Elementary opened and drew a large percentage of
the white population from the school. This put the school
out of compliance with the Office of Civil Rights (OCR)
guidelines.
Hoping to integrate the school population, the Palm Beach
County School District wrote a federal grant for 3.2
million dollars to create magnet schools for several schools
in the district. In 1989, S. D. Spady Elementary became
the first Montessori Magnet School and the first Elementary
Magnet School in Palm Beach County. It was a huge success
and the school has maintained a diverse student population
ever since. Later this spring, students and parents will
return to a newly constructed and renovated school.
S.D. Elementary School is located in Delray Beach, Florida.
