Director

Ralph B. Johnson is Professor of Architecture, the Director of the Center for Urban Redevelopment and Education (CURE), and Director of the Center for the Conservation of Architectural and Cultural Heritage (CCACH), in the College of Architecture, Urban and Public Affairs at Florida Atlantic University (FAU). He is a longstanding participant in the field of historic preservation as an educator, advocate, and consultant and was at a time the coordinator for Community Design Centers nationwide for the American Institute of Architects in Washington, D.C. Professor Johnson has served several terms, almost 9 years, as a member of the Board of Trustees, Florida Trust for Historic Preservation and holds the honor of Trustee Emeritus. He was formally President of the Miami-Dade County Historic Preservation Board and also a member of the Board of Directors, Dade Heritage Trust in Miami and recently the Historic Preservation Board of Fort Lauderdale. He is now a member of the Board of Directors of the historic Bonnet House. While at the University of Florida as the Assistant Dean of the College of Architecture, he was the director of the Research and Education Center for Historic Preservation (RECAP) and served as the liaison to the College's other preservation programs including the Preservation Institute: Nantucket (PI:N) and the Preservation Institute: Caribbean (PI:C). He studied Architectural Conservation at ICCROM in Rome and has conducted research in historic preservation at sites throughout the greater Caribbean Region such as Florida, Cuba, the Bahamas, the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, and Mexico. As a Public Art enthusiast he served on the Broward County Public Art Committee for several years. Professor Johnson received has a Bachelor's degree in Architecture from Howard University; a Master's degree in City Planning from Yale University; and a Master's degree in Architecture also from Yale University.

Assistant Director

Venesia M. Thompson is the Assistant Director of FAU-CURE. She joined the Center in August 2000. She is responsible for coordinating and overseeing the Center’s research and outreach programs; developing partnerships with public, private, and nonprofit organizations as well as providing customized technical assistance to community partnership organizations. She is also the Center's grantswriter and editor/writer of the "CURE News" newsletter. Ms. Thompson co-teaches a grantswriting workshop for nonprofits three times per year and is currently the Principal Investigator for the 21st Century Community Learning Center project. She is a member of the National Political Science Honor Society "Pi Sigma Alpha". She holds a Masters degree in Political Science from Florida Atlantic University, a Bachelors degree in Language, Linguistics, and Literature from the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, Jamaica, and a Certificate of Specialization in Community and Economic Development from FAU's Department of Urban and Regional Planning.

Area Director (21st Century Community Learning Centers)

Kerry L. Kennedy is the Area Director of the 21st Century Community Learning Center Program (CCLC) at CURE. Ms. Kennedy the Center in Febraury 2005, after working more than 10 years in Arts Administration and Educational/Community Outreach. She also served as Administrator of the Public Art and Design Program at Broward County Cultural Affairs Division where she managed a diverse number of projects, including Trust Account Projects, Aviation, Port, Streetscapes, Parks, Libraries, Conservation, Education/Public Programs and Public Relations. Prior to this, Ms. Kennedy worked as a Curator of Objects at the Orange County Historical Museum in Orlando, Florida; a Museum Educator with the Valentine Museum in Richmond, Virginia; and a Console Supervisor at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, Virginia. Ms. Kennedy will oversee the operation of four learning centers in Palm Beach County, including staffing, afterschool activities, and reporting. Ms. Kennedy received her Master’s degree in Art History with a focus on Museum Studies from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Hampton University.

Site Coordinator - 21st CCLC @ Dyson Circle

Anishka N. Glanville is the Site Coordinator of the 21st Century Community Learning Center at Dyson Circle, West Palm Beach, Florida. She joined the CURE in July 2004 as the Enrichment Coordinator and assistant to the former Site Coordinator. She is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Dyson Circle (New Beginnings) learning center, which includes overseeing student enrollment; coordinating and scheduling academic and enrichment activities; developing partnerships for sustaining the program and expanding service delivery; community outreach; collecting data for program evaluation; and coordinating educational field trips. Ms. Glanville is currently completing her Bachelor's degree in Organizational Management at Palm Beach Atlantic University.

Site Coordinator - 21st CCLC @ Riviera Beach Academy, Inc.

MaryLou Northern is the Site Coordinator of the 21st Century Community Learning Center housed at the Riviera Beach Academy, Inc, Riviera Beach, Florida. She joined the CURE in July 2004 as the Enrichment Coordinator and assistant to the former Site Coordinator. She is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Riviera Beach learning center, which includes overseeing student enrollment; coordinating and scheduling academic and enrichment activities; developing partnerships for sustaining the program and expanding service delivery; community outreach; collecting data for program evaluation; and coordinating educational field trips. Ms. Northern holds a Bachelor's degree in Christian Counseling from Jacksonville Theological College. She is currently completing a second Bachelor's degree in Psychology at Palm Beach Atlantic University.

Florida Pedestrian Safety Coordinator

Joy Riddell administers a statewide grant from Florida Department of Transportation, which is designed to encourage, educate, and motivate counties, cities, and communities on ways to solve their pedestrian problems, and motivate them to become walkable communities. She has been involved with pedestrian issues since 1994, after a career in advertising and marketing in New York and South Florida. A resident of Greater Fort Lauderdale since 1968, she is very active in community organizations. She is a graduate of Centenary College in New Jersey and Barry University, Miami, Florida.

Assistant To The Florida Pedestrian Safety Coordinator

Andrea M. Gentry is the new Research Assistant at the Walk Florida Pedestrian Safety Resource Center at FAU-CURE. She joined the staff in December 2003 and oversees the pedestrian safety outreach programs. In addition, she is responsible for filling statewide requests for materials relating to the program as well as training volunteers. Andrea has been a resident of South Florida since 1974 when she moved from New Jersey. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Education and English from the University of Hartford and has taught for Broward County Schools as well as alternative education programs (FOSI and CHARLEE). A change in career led her to seek work in the geriatric field as a case manager where she assessed and coordinated the needs of elderly clients and their families. This resulted in the development of "A Caregiver's Handbook" (not yet published). Andrea is an active member of the Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk Committee for 14 years, Broward Coalition on Aging (BCOA), Elder Service Resource Network (ESRN), and Friends of Children United to Succeed (FOCUS).

Program Assistant

Edeline DuFour is FAU-CURE’s Program Assistant. She helps plan and coordinate the Center's many outreach programs, including the Capacity-Building Workshops (grantswriting, nonprofit startup, fundraising); and the Computer Training Program. Ms. DuFour also assists with client registration for various workshops and seminars.

Executive Secretary

Daphne Isaacs is the Executive Secretary for FAU-CURE. She has been with the Center since 1995 and assists staff with coordinating events and workshops and monitoring organizational budget. She received her Diploma in Office Procedures from Thames Valley University (formerly Reading Institute of Technology), Berkshire, England.

Student Intern

Vania R. Duailibi is the Center's student intern/assistant. She is pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Architecture with a minor in Urban and Regional Planning at Florida Atlantic University. She is currently working on the City of Hollywood Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) Historic Properties Survey project and the City of West Park Smart Growth Educational Program. Raised in Brazil, she is fluent in English and Portuguese.
